Biography of Shihan Cecilia(Ceci) Yuk-Man Cheung
I was introduced to martial arts in 1982 at a karate dojo in Southern California. I advanced through the ranks and achieved Shodan in 1988. During those years, I participated and medaled in tournament events in Southern California including the Goodwill Karate Tournaments. Our organization also hosted annual inter-dojo tournaments of which I was involved in competition and organization.
In 1999, I attained the rank of Godan and eventually assumed the teaching responsibility and established branch dojo(s) in the San Bernardino and San Diego areas. After a brief period of training under Sensei James Miyaji of Waipahu, Hawaii, I sought out Hanshi Del Saito of Grants Pass, Oregon.
In 2004, I was formally accepted by Hanshi Saito and went under his tutelage. I retained my rank of Godan through homologation. In the following year, I was honored by Hanshi Saito with the title of Shihan and joined the Shihan Kai. As a member of the Shihan Kai, I participate in a leadership role and work collaboratively with Hanshi and members of the Shihan Kai to advance the mission of preservation, promotion and education of the martial arts and its traditions.
In 2006, my family and I relocated to Southern Oregon where I established a karate school in Medford, Oregon. In the same year, I was appointed by Hanshi as the Communications Director for the organization. In 2008, Hanshi Saito launched Saito-ha Shito-ryu Karate-do. I was privileged to witness this historic event and be a founding member of this new discipline. In 2008, I was appointed by Soke Saito and the Shihan Kai as the General Secretary of Saito-ha Shito-ryu Karate-do.
I maintain my karate training in Saito-ha Shito-ryu under the guidance of Soke Saito with regular practice and teaching. In the past 6 years, I have participated in international, national and regional karate competitions sponsored by organizations including the International Shito-ryu Karate-do and TKFI Saito-ha Shito-ryu Karate-do. I continue my duties as Administrative Assistant and assist Soke and Shihan Kai members in facilitating communications, planning and conducting of various events for our organization.
At my own dojo, the karate curriculum includes the teaching of traditional karate-do and character development, karate as a sport, and karate for self defense. My students regularly participate in regional, district and inter-dojo tournaments with favorable outcomes. Their efforts are often rewarded with medals, yet they understand the principle that dedication, commitment and effort are as important as winning medals.
I continue my commitment to Soke and the organization through service and teaching while continuing in the pursuit of personal growth in Saito-ha Shito-ryu Karate-do.
